CDEDI DEMANDS FOR EXPLANATION FROM MERA OVER A SECRET HIKE IN ELECTRICITY TARRIFIS

Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives-CDEDI has again pressed on ESCOM, barely a few days after the organization led Malawians into demonstrations against what it described as punitive taxes by government on cooking oil, water and fuel, among others.

Executive director for the organization, Slyvester Namiwa alleges that ESCOM hiked electricity tariffs in March this year, without the knowledge of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority-MERA.

According to Namiwa, it is suprising that MERA claims to have advised ESCOM not to effect the new electricity tarrifs, but there was no documentation on this.

Namwiwa has therefor called on MERA to discipline ESCOM over the incident, but has also demanded that ESCOM reverses its new tariffs and pay back what was overcharged.

‘MERA owes Malawians an explanation.  We think ESCOM has overcharged the unsuspecting consumers. Therefore it should pay back to Malawians and should put aside the exorbitant tarrifis,

Meanwhile, both ESCOM and MERA authorities are yet to comment on the matter.
