Health Experts worry over public issuing of ARVs

Health Expert Maziko Matemba has emphasized a need for hospital personnel to observe privacy at all levels.

He was commenting on recent revelations in Phalombe, that some health centers in the district are issuing Anti-Retral Viral drugs-ARvs publicly.

Matemba while saying this is unethical, says the tendency may jeopardize the fight against HIV/AIDS as some may shun receiving the medicine in fear of being discriminated against, by the public.

Health Expert Maziko Matemba :That some health centers in the district are issuing Anti-Retral Viral drugs-ARvs publicly.

“Every individual has a right to privacy and therefore anyone has to receive medical treatment with utmost secrecy. Those who want to disclose their status should do it on their own wish” He said.

Matemba suggests, health personnel should scrutinize the issue clearly and map way forward to protect patients privacy.

But commenting on the matter, ministry of health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe has however disclosed that the ministry introduced an integrated system of issuing medical treatment including ARTs, with an aim of keeping patients’ privacy.

In the new system, all patients are treated equally with none who are assigned to a special room nor date.

In the past, those on ART treatment were given a special day for receiving the drug, but government changed this and adopted the integrated system of giving out medicines.

Recent reports indicate that some health centers in Phalombe district are giving out ARVs to HIV positive patients as some individuals spectate.
