Government failing on transparency and accountability-Malawi Watch

Malawi watch has faulted government over its failure to maintain transparency and accountability on the amount of public funds that will be used for the presidential trip to Addis -Ababa in Ethiopia.

Speaking with Maziko radio station Malawi Watch Executive Director Billy Banda said Tonse Alliance Government has failed to walk the talk on its campaign promises as it has failed to disclose to the public how many government officials will accompany the state president on the trip to Ethiopia.

‘‘It speaks volumes that Dr. Chakwera is not is reality to the people of interest, what he has been doing consistently is pursuing his agenda not the agenda of the national interest, what I mean to say is that all the trips Dr. Chakwera has been undertaking are not benefiting the country,’’ said Banda.

Banda added that the president is an employee of the country’s citizens and what he is doing is not bering any fruits.

Meanwhile Good Governance Commentator Victor Chipofya, says despite the trip concerning the president and some government officials, Malawians are supposed to know how government is utilizing public funds.

Victor Chipofya: Despite the trip concerning the president and some government officials, Malawians are supposed to know how government is utilizing public funds.

‘‘First of all I have to say that as Malawians we have to know the number of people going with the president on this trip since the people are taxpayers and we have the right to know how the funds are being used because prviousl we saw presidential delegations filled with people on such kind of trip who had nothing to do on a particular trip,’’ said Chipofya.

According to Chipofya, Access to Information Act gives mandate to citizens of the country to know how government is running its dairy operations.

President Chakwera has left the country today for Ethiopia where he will be attending African Union summit which is scheduled for 4th to 6th February, 2022.

Among other objectives that will be discussed at the meeting are issues to deal with the fight against Covid 19 Pandemic in Africa.
